Originally from Brazil, where he studied Forest Engineering and Law, he before moving to London in 1989 and becoming involved in the wine trade the following year.
Part of his extensive travels and studies have included completing the ‘Master Napa Valley’ programme in the United States, Diplome d’Honneur at l’Ecole D’Alsace and becoming a member of the Champagne Academy and winning the ‘Golden Magnum Award’ as Top Student. He later received L’Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne in recognition of work promoting and serving the Champagne Region.
In the pursuit of becoming a Master of Wine, he has travelled to most of the world’s wine producing regions and has experience in working in New World and Old World wineries.
In September 2008 he obtained the qualification and title of ‘Master of Wine’ and was awarded the Top Student prize in the ‘Business of Wine’ section of the examination.
After contributing to the ‘The Wine Opus’ book, he co-wrote a book entitled ‘Conheça Vinhos’ (‘Understanding Wine’), a wine publication in Portuguese that won the ‘Gourmand World Cookbook Award’ in Paris.
He has contributed to several publications around the world including Decanter Magazine (UK), Drinks Business (UK), Adega (Brazil) and Grandes Escolhas (Portugal).
For most of his career he has been the Wine Director at some of the most important wine distributors in the UK. With three decades of experience in diverse sectors of the Wine Industry and extensive contacts he now consults for businesses around the world including Africa, South America and Europe.
He is a judge at international wine competitions, a technical advisor, commercial consultant and wine educator. He is a regular speaker at wine events around the world.
Dirceu Vianna Junior has been guiding Masterclasses at Vinho da Casa since its first edition in 2023.
Jamie Goode is a London-based wine writer, lecturer, wine judge and book author. With a PhD in plant biology, he worked as a science editor, before starting wineanorak.com, one of the world’s most popular wine websites.
He is columnist for UK national newspaper The Sunday Express, and writes regularly for a range of publications, including The World of Fine Wine, Meininger’s Wine Business International, Noble Rot, Wine & Spirits, Vine Pair and Drinks International.
He is in demand as a speaker/lecturer and also a wine judge, and is one of the co-chairs for the International Wine Challenge. He has been a regular overseas judge for the Top 10 Chenin Blanc competition in South Africa and WineAlign’s National Wine Awards of Canada. He has recently been a keynote speaker for the Simple Wine (Moscow), Cool Climate Wine Symposium, the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc Celebration, the Australian Wine Technical Conference, The Atlantic Wine Forum, the Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir Celebration, the Elgin Chardonnay Colloquium and Texsom. He has written four major books: Wine Science, Authentic Wine, I Taste Red and Flawless.
It is the first time he joins Vinho da Casa.
He is a journalist who has spent almost his entire professional career in the Porto newsroom of the newspaper Público, except for a brief period between 1999 and 2000 when he joined Diário Económico. In addition to being part of the group of young professionals selected in 1989 to form the first newsroom of Público, he held the positions of deputy editor and deputy director between 2000 and 2013. He also worked as a primary school teacher for two years.
Born in Alijó, in the Alto Douro region, he pursued higher education in Porto, first obtaining a bachelor’s degree from Escola Normal and later studying at the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of History at the University of Porto, where he earned his degree. He completed the journalism course at Cenjor and was a fellow at the German Marshall Fund in the United States and the International Studies and Training program in Japan.
He has won several journalism awards, the most recent in 2015—the Gazeta de Imprensa Award for a series of reports on the First World War in Mozambique, which formed the basis for this book. He was the director of Público and is part of the panel of political and economic commentators on RTP Informação and RTP2.
He is the author of the books “Guia do Douro e do Vinho do Porto”, “Ilha de Xisto”, dedicated to the Douro region, “O Vinho no Tempo da Guerra” (co-authored with António Barreto), and “Cores do Vinho Verde”, which remains a reference book on the region.
He regularly writes for the magazine Fugas of Público, where he oversees two annual editions dedicated to wine.
He is one of the critics for Vinhos de Portugal in Brazil, the largest Portuguese wine event in the country. He has been participating in Vinho da Casa since its first edition.
